Things to Do in Diamondhead
Discover activities and attractions in Diamondhead — golf, nature trails, community events, and family fun.
Diamondhead is a master-planned community in the northern part of Hancock County, set among the pine forests and gentle terrain of coastal Mississippi. Originally developed in the 1970s as a resort and residential community, it has grown into a well-established neighborhood with a strong identity built around golf, outdoor recreation, and community life. While it sits a bit inland from the Gulf shoreline, Diamondhead offers its own set of activities and attractions that make it worth visiting or calling home.
Golf
Golf is the cornerstone of recreation in Diamondhead. The community is home to two 18-hole championship courses: the Cardinal Course and the Pine Course. Both are open to the public and offer well-maintained fairways winding through the wooded landscape that gives Diamondhead its distinctive feel. The Cardinal Course is generally considered the more challenging of the two, while the Pine Course provides a slightly more forgiving layout that is popular with casual players and beginners.
The golf facilities include a pro shop, practice range, and clubhouse where players can relax after a round. Golf leagues, tournaments, and social events tied to the courses run throughout the year, making the golf scene here as much about community as competition.
Nature and Trails
Diamondhead’s setting among the pine forests and wetlands of southern Mississippi provides natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor exploration. Walking and jogging paths wind through the community’s residential areas and green spaces, offering a pleasant way to stay active in a quiet, scenic environment. Birdwatching is popular in the area, as the mix of forest, marsh, and open water habitats attracts a wide variety of species, particularly during migration seasons in spring and fall.
The Jourdan River, which runs near the community, offers additional outdoor opportunities including canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The river corridor is one of the more scenic and unspoiled natural areas in Hancock County.
Community Events and Activities
Diamondhead has an active community association that organizes events and activities throughout the year. These include holiday gatherings, social mixers, fitness classes, and seasonal celebrations that bring residents together. The community center and clubhouse facilities serve as gathering points for these events and provide spaces for clubs, groups, and classes.
For families, Diamondhead offers playgrounds, a community swimming pool, and organized youth activities. The safe, low-traffic residential streets are popular with cyclists and walkers of all ages.
Day Trips from Diamondhead
One of the practical advantages of Diamondhead’s location is its easy access to the rest of Hancock County and the broader Gulf Coast. Bay St. Louis and its arts district, galleries, and restaurants are about 15 minutes south. The beaches of Waveland are a similar distance away. Kiln, known as the hometown of NFL legend Brett Favre, is just to the north and offers a glimpse of rural Hancock County life.
Interstate 10 runs along the southern edge of the community, making Gulfport, Biloxi, and even New Orleans accessible for day trips.
A Quiet Base with Easy Reach
Diamondhead appeals to people who want a peaceful, community-oriented lifestyle without being far from the coast. It offers a different pace from the beachfront towns, with its own set of recreational and social offerings that make it a complete community rather than just a place to sleep. Whether you come for the golf, the nature, or the neighborhood feel, Diamondhead has more to offer than first meets the eye.
